VETERANS DAY SERVICE - SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10th AT 3:00 PM
A Veterans Day service was held at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at 3pm. The service began outdoors with the Powhatan High School JROTC Color Guard leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Attendees honored American veterans, living and deceased, who served this country honorably during wartime and peacetime. St. Luke’s cemetery has over forty service men and women interred, who served. During the service, we honored each by reciting their names.
We also invited St. Luke’s members and members of the Powhatan community to submit names of family member who served in the military and wanted their name to be mentioned.
SLHS PLANS ITS NEXT FIELD TRIP
IN THE SPRING
As its next field trip, St. Luke’s Historical Society is scheduled to adventure to Hickory Neck Church in Toana, VA, about a 75- minute drive from Powhatan.
Historic Hickory Neck Church’s oldest portion was built in 1734 on part of Hickory Neck Plantation. The elaborately built brick church was oriented east and west, in accord with Anglican tradition. The Church has a long history including being used during the American Revolution as a camp and as a military hospital.
A tentative date in the Spring of 2025 is currently being reviewed. More details to follow.
CHRISTMAS WREATH FUND RAISER
St. Luke’s Historical Society held another successful fund raiser. Seventy 21”-wreaths made from fresh evergreens and adorned with large red bows, were ordered. At the beginning of December, members of the SLHS placed the wreaths on stands on the graves of loved ones.
